One Woman’s Care Blossomed into Hope House
Hope House has been helping place people in long-term homes for 55 years. Rose McGarrigle came to Austin after fleeing Berlin, Germany, before World War II. She saw a need to care for children with disabilities at risk of neglect and isolation, many with no homes. She converted the garage of her West Austin home and drove her red Volkswagen bus around Austin, serving these special children in her own home.
Rose got local churches involved and used her own house to give room and board until the number of children and needed space outgrew the circumstances. The first Hope House arose near Liberty Hill in 1976, paid for with donations and lovingly completed with help from friends, family, staff members, and several foundations.
Today, 16 to 18 children live in the original home, and 24 senior adults and teenagers live in 2 duplex-style homes and 1 group home in Liberty Hill. Most of the adults with them today were Rose’s children in 1967. Hope House added the group home in 2017 using donations. The Huffington Post wrote about Hope House’s extraordinary mission in a 2016 blog.
Get Involved to Spread the Love
You can get involved in their mission and help support this local cause. Hope House relies on donors to care for the Hope House Community. Fees for their care cover only 80% of the budget, and the rest 20% comes from those who are all-in to support their local community.
Currently, Hope House needs donations the most. You can donate one time, monthly or quarterly online. The donation form is secure, and you can donate using PayPal, Venmo, a credit card, or mailing a check. If you have DAF (Donor Advised Funds), you can also give those to Hope House.
Or text hopehouse to 53-555 to make a donation. Visit the donation page for more information about donating by text and check. All donations are 100% deductible.
