Summer Recipes for the Whole Family

If your kiddos are at home this summer, you know it can be challenging to keep them entertained. Fear not—you can create fun and imagination right in your own kitchen! Try these simple but tasty creations to focus your energy and creativity on making lunch and snacks for those days when it’s too hot to go outdoors. And who knows—your little one may grow up to be the next Gordon Ramsay!

Sandwiches and Smoothies

Start with easy grilled cheese or PB&J sandwiches. Use a variety of cheeses and breads to teach them how to grill the perfect hot sandwich. And show them how to combine nut butter and jelly or jam to make a no-cook sandwich. Use peanut, pecan, almond, or walnut butter with any fruit spread on your favorite bread. Get creative with the sandwiches by using cookie or cake cutters to make fun shapes!

If your kids love milkshakes, teach them to whip up smoothies instead. They can use just five ingredients to make a healthy drink that tastes great. Blend two bananas, two cups of milk (or non-dairy milk), one-half cup of peanut butter (or other nut butter for those with allergies), two tablespoons of honey, and two cups of ice cubes for 30 seconds to get a protein-packed treat.

Colorful No-Bake Pizzas

Combine art and cooking to create a no-bake happy face pizza. Use veggies like bell peppers, olives, tomatoes, onions, arugula, and more on tortillas, pita bread, premade pizza crust, or flatbread. Add a layer of “sauce” like garlic or sun-dried tomato cream cheese, then set the kids loose, making funny, scary, and goofy faces.

Make a no-bake dessert or treat pizza using fruit, too! Teach your kids to peel and slice the fruit and whip the filling using cream cheese, sugar, and whipped topping. Next, make the graham cracker crust and press it into a pie pan (or use a prepared version if you’re short on time). Then, your kids can pile on the fruit toppings. Just about any fruit will do, and the more different varieties they use, the more creative their pizza will be.

Ice Cream in a Bag

Ice cream in a bag? What? No, really! Your kids will love making this sweet and cool treat. They only need five simple ingredients for this recipe—sugar, salt, vanilla extract, ice, and half and half. Mix them in a plastic zipper bag, shake it, and then freeze. Kids can get artistic by adding their favorite colorful toppings. Try colored marshmallows, sprinkles, breakfast cereal, or chopped nuts.
